FIRM HISTORY

Metzger Johnson Architects, Inc. was founded by David D. Metzger and Robert G. Johnson in 1982. Offices were simultaneously opened in Burlington, Iowa and Galesburg, Illinois, with primary markets in eastern Iowa and western Illinois. In order to provide our clients with complete in-house services in architecture and related engineering disciplines, Metzger Johnson merged with Smith Engineering Associates, Inc. in 1986.

Smith Engineering Associates, Inc., with its predecessor firm of Sherman Smith and Associates, Inc., has been in continuous operation since 1951. Sherman Smith and Company - Engineers was changed to the Iowa corporation of Sherman Smith and Associates, Inc., in 1969. Geotechnics, Inc. was formed as a wholly owned subsidiary in 1975. In 1986 the firm’s ownership was transferred to four of its existing Senior Engineers and Surveyors plus two Architects from the associated architectural firm of Metzger Johnson, Architects & Engineers, P.C. Client approval of the new combined organization reinforces anticipated opportunities available with such structuring.

In 2004 Metzger Johnson Architects, Inc. merged with Klingner & Associates P.C. to provide for additional in- house engineering consultation and coordination. The firms now operate as one company with different branches at four different locations.
