McMichael Hall Renovation
Monmouth College

Metzger Johnson was the architect.Built in 1914 as Monmouth College’s first dormitory, McMichael Hall underwent a total renovation in 1997-1998. Due to extra large rooms, high ceilings, large windows and historic character, this women’s dormitory is one of the most preferred and nets a higher room rate than “traditional” dormitories on campus.

Functionally, McMichael Hall has a traditional central corridor in each wing, with common restrooms and private showers. A lavatory in each dorm room minimizes congestion in common restrooms and provides an extra “perk” not available elsewhere.

Exterior work included brick, limestone and terra cotta restoration, new windows, roofing and maintenance free trim. An intimate plaza connects McMichael Hall to neighboring Grier Hall and provides a well used gathering spot.

Interior work included new durable thincoat plaster walls, new doors, frames and finish upgrades. The first floor lounge was restored to near original condition. Restrooms are finished with ceramic tile and solid surface lavatories and showers for ease of maintenance and longevity.

The original steam heating system was replaced with hot water radiant heat, with individual room controls.

Electrical work included an upgrade of the building’s service to accommodate increased loads in student rooms. Period reproduction light fixtures highlight all common areas. Each room is wired for telephone, data and cable TV.
