Rehabilitation of Museum & Restrooms
Nauvoo, Illinois

Metzger Johnson was the architect. As a portion of a multi-site project at Nauvoo State Park, the exterior of the Nauvoo State Park Museum was restored. This structure was built by the Mormons in the 1840’s, remodeled by the Icarians and later owned by the Rheinberger family. It served as the first Nauvoo Winery, from the 1860’s.

Exterior restoration of the museum included extensive brick and local limestone pointing. Original brick and stone materials were analyzed to locate replacements where necessary. Bedding and pointing mortar were analyzed to determine original proportions and sand gradations. Original double-hung wood windows were removed, restored off-site, weather stripped and reinstalled. Epoxy wood restoration products were utilized where possible to retain original historic sash and frames. All exterior wood surfaces were prepared and painted following masonry and window restoration.
