Metzger Johnson was the architect . Stabilization/Masonry Restoration Spring Valley House/Sulphur Springs Hotel Sulphur Springs Hotel has stood on the banks of the Illinois River since possibly 1849. The four story hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing structure that reflects early development of the upper Illinois River valley’s commerce, transportation and architecture in the mid-19th century.

The hotel is constructed of brick masonry bearing walls with exterior limestone facing, probably the local Trenton Limestone, known for its bluish tint, and Utica cement mortar. Interior framing is wood, with a heavy timber trussed roof system.

Sulphur Springs Hotel and a large tract of farm ground was purchased by the State of Illinois in the early 1990’s. Metzger Johnson Architects, Inc. was commissioned to prepare a detailed historic structures report, followed by construction documents for stabilization, pending a reuse for the structure. Work included masonry restoration of the local limestone veneer, structural reinforcing of the roof and floor structures, new roofing, storm windows, porch reconstruction, painting, mechanical and electrical work for the caretaker’s apartment, waterproofing and similar work to stabilize the building. Masonry restoration work included stone and mortar analysis, structural crack analysis, spot pointing and some stone replacement.
