Dahl Chapel and Auditorium Renovation

Metzger Johnson was the architect. Built in 1896, the Dahl Chapel and Auditorium is the oldest building on the Monmouth College campus. A major renovation was undertaken in 2002 to bring the functional aspects into the 21st century without sacrificing the historic character of the structure. Exterior work included a new limestone and brick veneer mechanical space to house the new HVAC system, restoration of limestone and brick bearing walls, restoration of the original wood windows and minor site work. Limestone was carefully selected and tooled to match the original local limestone. The basement of the structure was gutted and reconstructed to house band, choral and percussion practice rooms, music storage rooms, green room and dressing rooms. All rooms are isolated acoustically from each other and from the main performance hall above. Dahl Chapel, on the first floor, was substantially restored to maintain the historic character. Original heart pine floors and all woodwork were refinished, plaster surfaces were restored and main floor seating was replaced. The balcony was substantially reconstructed to improve spectator comfort and sightlines, as well as address life safety issues. Mechanical work included a new high volume, low velocity HVAC system with discreet supply diffusers and understage return. Electrical work included an upgrade of the building’s service to accommodate the increased load for HVAC equipment and theatrical lighting. A high quality sound, data and video system was installed throughout the building.
